A Day at Lanternvale

Theme park, family day out · Adult (40-55) · Irish · 60 seconds

We got to Lanternvale at nine sharp. By nine-oh-five, the twins had already found the pirate ship. By ten, we'd done the log flume twice. I was soaked. My husband was soaked. The twins were delighted. Then there was the giant maze, where we lost Granny for twenty minutes and found her having tea with a man dressed as a badger. Lunch was chips by the lake. Then the tractor ride, the petting farm, and a long queue for the Dragon Drop, which our eldest has been measuring herself against for two summers. This year, she was tall enough. She screamed the entire way down. Then she ran straight back to the queue. And at dusk, the lantern parade. Hundreds of glowing lanterns floating past, and the twins asleep on our shoulders before it finished. Lanternvale Family Park. Open daily until October, with family tickets from the gate or online. Come for the rides. Stay for the lanterns.

Juniper's Story

Toys, dolls · Adult (30-45) · Neutral American · 60 seconds

When my daughter opened the box, she didn't say anything at first. She just held the doll up next to her face and looked. Same curly hair. Same brown eyes. Same little gap in her teeth. Juniper Jubilee Dolls come in over forty skin tones, hair textures and face shapes, with glasses, hearing aids, wheelchairs and freckles available too. Every doll has soft, poseable arms and legs, and outfits you can mix and match. She's named hers Juniper, because she says that's the right name. Juniper goes everywhere. Breakfast. The bath. The dentist. Juniper has had a lot of check-ups this month. I didn't cry when she opened it. I cried later, folding laundry, when I realised why it hit me so hard. I never had one that looked like me. She does. Juniper Jubilee Dolls. A friend who sees you. Outfits and accessories sold separately.

Yarnspin Tower

Board games · Mature (55+) · Irish · 60 seconds

Every Sunday, my grandchildren come over and we play Yarnspin Tower. And every Sunday, I win. They think I'm lucky. Here's how it works. You pull a card, and it gives you three words. You've got one minute to tell a story using all three. Then you add a block to the tower. If the story's good, you stack it. If the story's bad, the others can make you stack it upside down. First person to knock the tower over, loses. It's for two to six players, ages seven and up, and it takes about half an hour, unless my grandson is telling the story, in which case it takes a week. My granddaughter asked me my secret once. Tell the story like you believe it. Keep a straight face. And never let them see you wobble. Also, I've been cheating at cards since nineteen sixty-four. But that's another game. Yarnspin Tower. Every family has a storyteller.

First Ride

Toys, ride-on · Adult (30-45) · Neutral American · 60 seconds

It's the first warm Saturday of spring. And she's been waiting all week. She's wearing her helmet with the stickers on it. She's holding the handlebars like they might run away. And she's looking at me, not the path, which is the first thing I tell her not to do. The Rollamble Starter has three wheels for balance, a wide deck for little feet, and a lean-to-steer design that's easy to learn. When she's ready, it converts to two wheels, and later, to a big-kid scooter. I hold on to the back of her jacket. We go to the end of the drive. And back. And again. On the fourth time, she says, 'Dad. You can let go.' So I let go. She rolls to the end of the drive on her own, turns around, and grins at me like she's just crossed an ocean. Rollamble. Their first ride. Their first big 'I did it.' Always wear a helmet.

Nodlet Bedtime

Kids' app · Adult (30-45) · Neutral British · 60 seconds

Seven o'clock. Bath. Teeth. Pyjamas. One more glass of water. One more story. One more question about whether sharks sleep. Bedtime, in our house, used to take about two hours. Then a friend told me about Nodlet Stories. It's a bedtime app for little ones, ages two to seven. Gentle stories, read by warm, calm voices, with soft music and a screen that dims to dark, so they can listen with their eyes closed. There's a new story every night. There's a sleepy-breathing game, where you blow out the stars one by one. And there's a timer, so the story ends quietly and the room stays peaceful. No ads. No buttons to tap. Nothing to keep them awake. Last night, my son was asleep before the little fox found his way home. I stayed and listened to the end. Nodlet Stories. Try it free for two weeks. Sweet dreams, little ones.
