Blue Ribbon Summer

Down by the River

[Music bed: slow electric blues, harmonica] There's a place down by the river where the smoke rolls off the pits and the guitars roll off the stage. The Riverbend Blues and Barbecue Festival is back for its twentieth year, September twentieth and twenty-first, at Levee Park in downtown Carthage. Two days. Two stages. Over twenty bands, from front-porch acoustic to full-blown electric. And Saturday night, the Mudcat Revival close out the main stage, right as the sun goes down over the water. Meanwhile, thirty of the region's best pitmasters are fighting it out for the Golden Hog trophy, and you get to eat the evidence. Bring a lawn chair. Bring the kids. There's a family zone with face painting, crafts, and a bounce house the size of a barn. Tickets are twenty dollars a day, and kids under twelve get in free. Show Day at Bunyip Creek

It's the biggest weekend of the year in the valley, and it's nearly here. The Bunyip Creek Show is on Saturday the eighth and Sunday the ninth of March at the Bunyip Creek Showgrounds. There's the cattle judging and the sheep shearing, with the best stock in the district. The wood chop, where the axemen have been training all year. And the dog high jump, which is exactly as good as it sounds. Wander the pavilions for the best scones, jams and pumpkins in the district. Then hit sideshow alley for rides, showbags, fairy floss and a dagwood dog. Saturday night there's the rodeo, and the whole thing wraps up on Sunday with the grand parade and fireworks. Adults are fifteen dollars, kids are five, and under fives get in free. Parking's free too. The Bunyip Creek Show. Bring the whole family, and a hat.
