Why Do Leaves Fall?

[DOCTOR DOT, host of a science show, stands under a big orange tree. A letter flutters down] Oh! We got a question from Noah, who is six. Noah wants to know, why do leaves fall off trees? Great question, Noah. Let's look. All summer, leaves work really hard. They catch sunlight and turn it into food for the tree. Like tiny solar panels! But in the fall, the days get shorter. There's less sunlight. And the tree knows winter is coming. So the tree does something clever. It closes a little door where each leaf joins the branch. No more water goes in. The green fades away, and we see the yellows and oranges that were hiding underneath. Then, snap! The leaf lets go. The tree is saving its energy. It rests all winter, and in spring, it grows brand-new leaves. So next time you jump in a leaf pile, say thank you, tree. You worked hard!

Kites. Everybody smiling. Nobody ever looks up and says, hello, Nimbus. Nice shape today, Nimbus." So Nimbus did what grumpy clouds do. He rained. Down went the picnic blankets. Up went the umbrellas. And Nimbus waited for everyone to be as grumpy as he was. But then something strange happened. A little girl in green boots ran out into the street. She jumped in a puddle. Splash! Then another. Splash! "Thank you, cloud!" she shouted. "Best puddles ever!" Nimbus blinked. "Thank you? To me?" Then her friends came out. Then their dads. Then a very old man with a very old dog. Splash, splash, splash! The flowers stood up straight. The garden drank and drank. "Look," said the girl, pointing up. "The cloud is shaped like a heart." Nimbus checked. She was right. He hadn't even tried. From that day on, Nimbus was still a little grumpy. Clouds usually are.
