"Should be here," she said, "in about three weeks."

Nobody said anything for a long time. Outside the window, space was the same as it had always been — vast, dark, indifferent. Only now they knew something was moving through it.

I moved along. Two blocks later, in a bathroom that smelled like rust and old fear, I sat on the floor and let my hands shake for exactly forty-five seconds. Then I stood up, straightened my coat, and went to make the drop.

After they left, she sat in the late sun and thought about her husband, dead forty years, and how he had always known exactly who she was — the same way, she supposed, she had always known herself. She found this comforting. She did not try to explain why.

I don't remember Pip. I don't remember the left side of the bed. But for the rest of that day, I felt the shape of a dog I never had — some phantom warmth against my leg — and I could not decide if that was memory or just longing, and whether there was any real difference between the two.

I have tried not picking it up. The loop doesn't care. She drops it anyway. Someone else picks it up. We end up in the same place by different routes, like the day is a river that knows where it's going regardless of which bank you walk on.

"Why this day?" she asked me once — this version of her, who doesn't know about the other eighteen. I didn't have a good answer. "Because something happens today," I said carefully, "that I'm trying to stop." She looked at me for a long moment. "Does it work? Eventually?" "I don't know yet," I said. That, at least, was the truth.

"What does that last one mean?" I asked the relocation officer, six weeks after landing, standing in two inches of purple rain outside a habitat module that was technically a repurposed fuel drum. "It means your estate is still obligated to complete your shift rotation," she said, without looking up. "That's not legal." "It's in the contract." "I didn't read—" "Page thirty-nine," she said. "Paragraph four."

I went back to work. What else was I going to do — quit? Page forty-one had something to say about that too.

Rue considered this. Outside, the sky moved through colours that had no names yet. Everything they'd known was gone. Everything they were going to know hadn't started. They were living in the hinge of it, which was terrifying, and also, somehow, very still. "Okay," said Rue finally. "Me too."

I copied the partition, pulled the drive, and was back in the corridor in two minutes forty. Some days the work is elegant. This was not one of those days — this was fast and graceless and I'd bitten my cheek on the way in — but we had what we came for, and the station's cameras had a seventeen-second loop that nobody had patched in eight months. Sometimes sloppy gets the job done.

She had decided, somewhere in the six hours of waiting, that looking back was a luxury she could not afford and a grief she could not carry all the way to wherever they were going. She would grieve when she arrived. She would grieve when she had somewhere to do it in.

I waited for his thoughts to confirm or deny this. They were, for the first time in my memory, quiet. Not empty — quiet. Like something had decided to be careful with me. I didn't know what to do with that. I sat down next to him and said nothing. The train arrived. For eleven stops, I heard only the track.

"Did it help?" my son asked. "No," I said. He nodded like he'd expected that. He'd lost her too. He understood that what we missed wasn't her words — it was the version of her we hadn't met yet. The one we'd never get to now. No archive holds that.

Facing the direction Avel-3 always watched from. Avel-3 did not include this in the reports. Avel-3 was not certain what it meant. Avel-3 was not certain that uncertainty was something that should be in the reports either. The cup was always the right temperature. That, at least, seemed important.

The bad news is that it was twenty-two minutes of mission data and eleven seconds of personal messages, and in those eleven seconds my daughter told me she'd lost her first tooth and I wasn't there, and I will not be there for the next one either, or the one after that.

I've been out here long enough that Earth has started to feel like something I'm remembering rather than somewhere I'm going back to. I keep the photograph above my console. She's grinning in it — that big ridiculous grin she does. I look at it during the comms blackouts, when the silence gets wide. It helps. It also doesn't help at all. Both things, at once, every day. End log.

My youngest asked me last week where we were going. I told her: further. She thought about that with the seriousness children bring to big things. "Is further good?" "I think so," I said. "The people who went before us thought so." She looked out at the dark, which was vast and full of something, and nodded slowly. "Okay," she said. "Further." And that, I think, is how it has always worked. One generation hands the word to the next, and the next carries it on.
