Transactional Distractionism and How it Affects Your VO Journey

May 19, 2020

So, I’ve started this article with a term you’ve probably never heard before…

And that’s with good reason.

Because it’s a made-up term! And I can’t claim to own it, but a number of my close friends know exactly what it means… Shortly, you’ll have a solid understanding of it too!

What is it? How can it erode my profits?

By way of explanation, You know how you’ve sat down with a plan or goal in mind? Maybe it was to compile a new demo for a Fiverr gig you are working on or to update your profile or complete a series of auditions?

You started well, you opened the website in question, started to pull together the resources you require to complete your task, turned off the TV, shooed the kids away, or gave them something to do and found a quiet spot to work away…

...then your phone beeps, Oh look, Katy Perry has posted a new dance item on Instagram! You ignore it, but the phone face down and look at your computer again…

Oh look, what’s that email referring to? Let’s have a quick look… I’ll get back to work in a moment… Aaawww how cute! A youtube link and look it’s a baby giraffe and looks at that, he’s kissing a kitten! That’s gorgeous, isn’t it? I’d love a baby giraffe… so cute…

Now, where was I....? Oh, that’s right, gee, I could go a cup of coffee…

And there you have it, transactional distractionism has taken place... again!

And the time you’d allocated to be super productive and take your VO Journey further have completely evaporated from within your grasp and now, you’re running late to your next pressing event or work request or ‘family promise’ that you need to attend to, etc…

I’m sure we’ve all experienced this feeling before and the ‘sinking realization’ that once again, another perfect growth opportunity has slipped through your entrepreneurial fingers…

An important note is to NOT be too hard on yourself, as I’m sure, this scenario has happened to all of us from time to time. The really important ‘take away’ is really to ensure you ‘stick to your guns’ and utilize the time we have to get things done, because, obviously, it’s precious… It’s productivity time that you’ll never get back which then means you’re having to forfeit something else!

What can I do to ensure TD doesn’t affect my business?

The first step, Is to have a weekly planner with all of your plans for the week laid out…

Granted, there will always be distractions of one type or another to ‘lead you away’ from what’s most important for the moment… What we need to do, as Entrepreneurs and Voice Talent, is to be vehemently protective of our allocated tasks to ensure they are completed and tasks are ticked off… Let’s face it, It’s the only way to grow your voiceover business.

Working on your plan…

A helpful technique to make your productivity time irresistible and hard to be distracted away from is to really lay out the specifics of what you plan to do with that time…

Don’t just block out time on your planner and call it ‘video construction’ for example…

Be really specific with your description and your plan… A good example would read like: Build an audio compilation for my ‘conversational’ gig on Fiverr and use the audio file as a demo on the voice realm as well.

As you can see, until you’ve completed the specifics of your particular listing on your planner, you’re not done are you? A ‘great motivator’ to get things done… If you’d like a hand in putting together your planner for a successful voiceover business CLICK HERE
